The Ivory Tower on Main Street: Evidence and Advocacy at the Crossroads
Dr. Danielle Martin, University of Toronto

Friday, November 28, 2014
Vancouver, British Columbia

The relationship between researchers and advocates in Canada is changing, and Medicare stands to benefit from that change. We have long known that evidence is not the only input to policy, but to make informed changes in Canadian health care financing and delivery we need to use evidence along with values and other critical inputs. In this session Dr. Danielle Martin will provide an analysis of the intersection between research and advocacy and apply some lessons to the current public debate about national Pharmacare.

Dr. Danielle Martin is Vice-President, Medical Affairs and Health System Solutions at Women’s College Hospital (WCH) in Toronto, Ontario and a family physician in the Family Practice Health Centre at WCH. She is also Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine and the Institute for Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto, the medical correspondent for CBC’s The National, a regular guest on the Steven and Chris Show, a columnist for Canadian Living, and an in-demand speaker on the future of Canada’s health care system. In 2006 she helped launch Canadian Doctors for Medicare, and chaired the board until May 2013. She sat two terms on the Health Council of Canada and is a recipient of the Canadian Medical Association Award for Young Leaders. In 2013 she was named by the Toronto Star in its list of the “13 People to Watch.”

Presented by the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Evaluation, the UBC Centre for Health Services and Policy Research, the BC Health Coalition, the Broadbent Institute, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives BC Office, Women's College Hospital, and Canadian Doctors for Medicare.
