Where are They Now? C2E2 Alumni Victor Sanchez tells his story
Dr. Sanchez is currently an Associate Professor in Computer Science at the University of Warwick, UK. He has a background in computer science and engineering with applications to diverse areas, including medical image processing and simulation. He has developed algorithms to manage and analyze whole slide images (WSIs), currently used in digital pathology. His contributions have allowed pathologists to access these imaging data remotely more efficiently, as well as facilitated the development of computer-aided diagnosis techniques using machine learning.
He joined C2E2 as a CIHR PhD student within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (University of British Columbia) under the supervision of Prof. Boris Sobolev. His research work focused on the development of discrete-event simulation models of patient flow.
His current research interests include:
- Machine learning algorithms for medical image processing
- Signal processing applications to medicine, including coding, access, and transmission of very large medical imaging data.
Dr. Sanchez's research on digital pathology has been funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), of the UK and the Research Executive Agency of the European Union through a Marie Curie Career Integration Grant.
