From the Ward to the Board: Health Care Context and Considerations in 2024

Health care in 2024 is complex and under strain. Workforce considerations, patient and community engagement, broader definitions of health to include social care, partnerships, innovation, and constrained resources add to the complexities of delivering high-quality care to British Columbians. Clinicians, academics, educators, health leaders, politicians and the public are all needing to adapt to rapid changes in the health system. This presentation will discuss the context and considerations, with a focus on areas of inquiry, that could support health system improvements in B.C.
Participants will:
1. Gain an understanding of unique considerations in healthcare in 2024;
2. Consider specific areas of inquiry that could inform and transform care;
3. Engage in a discussion to generate strategies that may enhance collective impact.
Dr. Devin Harris
Chair, Health Quality B.C.; Executive Medical Director, Quality, Engagement and Research, Interior Health; Clinical Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, UBC.
Dr. Devin Harris is a health care leader, researcher and clinician who has held numerous health care leadership roles. He holds the position of Council Chair, Health Quality B.C. and is Executive Medical Director, Quality, Engagement and Research in Interior Health. Clinically, he has practiced Emergency Medicine since 2001 in multiple departments in British Columbia. Further, he is Clinical Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, University of British Columbia, and is currently an investigator on multiple research trials. He is Academic Advisor for the Physician Leadership Program in the Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia and teaches quality improvement and healthcare leadership in numerous other programs. He is a strong advocate of innovation and partnerships in healthcare with a focus on equitable and patient-centered care.
